Don't know if you noticed B4p, but that was silent film era. La Cumparsita was added in as an experiment. Seemed to work fine

Interesting. ..He doesn't seem so bent at the knees as we have been led to expect is de rigeur in the tango and AT...

As a point of interest, I spent 3 months wandering around Argentina and Chile earlier this year, including a bit of time in Buenos Aires.  The tango I saw was on the street and was more akin to the AT - but not exactly it.... Ballroom and Latin inevitably become stylised and rules imposed in order to judge and critique in competition.  So all dances inevitably lose their original flow and freedom and become more restricted and restrictive... The jive on strictly and pro competitions isn't the jive danced in clubs by my aged relatives for example.

Anyway - it's all fascinating stuff and I love seeing these clips of older or original interpretations of a particular dance :-)

Ha,ha. I was that soldier (read elder relative). alien

I was in at the birth of Palais style rock land roll/jive call it what you will. Primarily it was the war-time American jive, Jitterbug and Bee-bop we just fitted to rock and roll music in the mid and late fifties. We learned it in clubs, from friends, partners and our own invention and routines. It used to make us laugh when Dance Salons advertised teaching rock and roll and jive lessons that were totally the regimented opposite of the wild, free-style dance we did and loved. I went on to be a member of our local Mecca (The Palais) rock and roll team competing against other Mecca ballroom teams in the area. Never once did any of us have a formal lesson. Hippies, Pah! cheers

And Anita & Robin used it for their Salsa...it'll be good fun but I reckon Steve's more of a Ballroom boy. By the way, did you guys see this? Nice clip of Steve comparing the other celebs to animals: http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/29564625

I can totally imagine Caroline and Pasha Quickstepping to that Grease song, I think the audience will really enjoy it, as they will Alison's (though hers is a bit cliché for me).

Jake's got a good track to Jive to.

Tim Paso-ing to Tina Turner... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Love 'Jump in the Line but would have thought it more Samba than Salsa?

I can't picture 'Call me Maybe' as a Cha-Cha but no doubt the band can tweak that

I have friends that play Sam Smith constantly, so I shall mute that one. Nice voice but I'm all Sam Smith'd out. Second thoughts, I get fed up with the grunt & groans of the Rhumba, and shiver even at the thought of a Rhumba between 'The Midwich Cuckoo siblings' so I'll probably make a cup of tea at that point.

Absolutely love Billy Fury. It always saddened me that if he'd been born a generation later, they could have fixed his heart problem. Cracking Tango choice. I shall close my eyes on that one.

Jake chanelling Elvis should be good, and I hope Simon can let himself go and enjoy his Charleston

Love Tim but I can't stop humming 'Simply a rest' (or for O la Simply a Vest)

Week 4 Dances & Tunes

Pick of the bunch for me.....

Judy and An ton - Yes.  Tango to ‘Jealousy’ by Billy Fury. (Good, but whould have preferred Frankie Laine's version)

Pixie and Trent - No-no. Can't stand blokes who sing like they've caught their plums in their fly-zip.

Jake and Janette - Yes. Jive to ‘All Shook Up’ by Elvis Presley. Rock and roll, man....

Simon and Kristina - Yes, Charleston to ‘My Old Man (Said Follow The Van)’. Should work well for a Charlston. One of the few inspired choices

Thom and Iveta - Yes. Just cos I like the song. Foxtrot to ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ by The Foundations.

Tim and Natalie - Paso Doble to ‘The Best’ by Tina Turner. Hmmm.
( I'm a Tina fan, but I'd rather have had Steamy Windows or better still, paso music.

Big thumbs up to 'Jealously' great choice (and I suspect could see Mrs Murray through another week - coupled with being firmly in hold and with the votes of A ntons army)
Thumbs up also to the Billy Fury one - I approve.

I've got mixed feelings about some of the other tracks but a big thumbs down to 'Build me up buttercup' (sorry Sax - as a song it is really good) but SCD have used it several times as a jive - it is very bouncy and I can't see it as a Foxtrot unless the tempo is going to be slowed down to make it smoother. I'm actually really concerned about the Foxtrots that we have seen so far - barely recognisable as Foxtrots in fact.

Not sure about 'My old man said follow the van' - more' pearly kings and queens meets Chas and Dave' than charleston but it could work at a fast tempo - Simon will have to bring a lot of acting to this one, but he did well with his jive on the first week so this might suit him more than what he got last week and the week before and might get him some 'feel good' votes which he needs.

Not sure about Tina Turner either - but at least it is a strong track for Tim.

Well you can't win them all as Mr T says!!!!!

Ps - Just noticing pixie and dixie on ITT - 'Waites warm up' - I see she is kicking her leg in the air again!!!! Ian has just mentioned about the dance needing more rhumba technique. I didn't notice until their QS was played back last night how many errors there were - I think they are really going for the 'look' of their dances and I'm beginning to think this could mask various issues.

I didn't mention 'Tiger Feet' - interesting choice!!!! Mind you I prefer to see Mud on screen doing the original 'Tiger Feet' dance of which I can do all of it......... bit of a dodgy accomplishment I know. Laughing

I think I'm echoing most here when I say I'm loving the Elvis song (at last - a proper 50's rock n roll song for the jive...) and Jealousy for the Tango. Also love Jump the Line, but agree that it may be more Samba than Salsa. And the other song they are using for the Salsa is a disco classic - even when covered by Gloria Estafan it didn't really get more Latinized... Build me up Buttercup says jive to me, as does Tiger Feet and We Go Together....

But hell - what do I know?

DON'T like My Old Man (but agree it works for Charleston - just...), Simply the Best (Paso? How?) or Bootylicious for a Samba. The Rumba song is iffy too, and with Pixie and Trixie performing it I will join Sax by the kettle...

Unless Jake has an injury or gets a knock on the head I predict his dance to go down an absolute storm - how could you not be standing on your feet with just the anticipation of the treat of a good celeb dancer jiving to an Elvis classic?

Forgot to say - American Smooth to Total Eclipse of the Heart.... No! Just NO!

An American Smooth should be, well, smooooth - reference Brendan and Sunetra last week. This song is gravelly and very definitely un-smooth. Like pebble dash or Artex instead of smooth plaster. Yes it has sentimental lyrics but that doesn't make it right for an American Smooth. Grrr. Cross now! Evil or Very Mad

Oh yes.............. and they would probably try and make it into a foxtrot!!!!! Anything goes! (mind you it's another one for which I can do a good' turn' round the living room!!!!!!! lol!

Diamonds - I agree with your comments about 'Total eclipse of the heart' - potentially difficult for anyone, let alone Scott.
Also - I too think that Jake's jive will go down really well and put him back at the top of the leaderboard.

Just one little thing for Jake. He's done Tango and Godfather Waltz in the last two week, just hope Jannete reminds him that the jive is bouncy, frantic and Daddy Cool and not Vito Corleone or Chollo the Argentinian hit man.. Tons of shake-rattle and roll and this isn't a dance for worrying about posture or body lines. Dance to the music and have big fun, but most of all, look like you're having it. Something like.... Very Happy

My thoughts exactly diamonds. It's too harsh for an American Smooth. It's not a song I'd put with any of the dances, but at a push - Paso!

If Joanne chose that song she ought to be fired! Evil or Very Mad

But it's more likely picked by some sadistic producers who secretly hate Scott...

Fascinating interview with Tristan in which he reveals how the music is given to them:

http://www.macmaniacs.org/macmusings/interview-with-tristan-october-15-2014#comments

He comes across as really lovey and clears a lot of stuff up that we often wonder about.

I'm not keen on producers deciding who gets what music. It makes the show open to manipulation - with some couples potentially getting good songs / themes (especially when it matters) and others being saddled with less suitable ones. I'd rather the pros were in charge of their own destiny.
