Hello! Been taking Argentine Tango lessons!

Post  Littlebear on Wed Mar 27, 2013 9:36 pm

Just fancied popping in to share my excitement about it!

After a miserable year last year with my hypermobility syndrome, and flare up after flare up, and infection after infection, and after 3 sickness bugs in 2 months in autumn (including my missing most of the Srtictly final because I was throwing up), I finally got the motivation to do what I needed to improve my health and go on a Primal/paleo type diet just before Christmas. I have done it in the past and felt much better (more able to fight off infections, digestive issues disappeared, flare ups less bad and less frequent) but not managed to sustain it.

This time my results were so drmatic that sustaining it felt natural. By the end of January I felt so much better (the best I have felt in two years of hardcore physio) I felt able to start Argentine Tango classes with Mr Bear. We have both completely got the bug! I have wanted to do Argentine tango ever since I had a class in Buenos Aires 10 years ago, but at first classes were hard to find, then I had babies, then I got ill. So 10 years of waiting and mostly thinking I would never be able to do it. And now I can!

I am absolutely loving it - I have really missed this buzzing, motivated feeling which I haven't had for ages.

It's quite challenging and I have had to work hard improving my core strength, balance and propriocentricity (all the things we bendies struggle with) but it's so exciting and rewarding. I do hurt a lot afterwards! But I have got to the point now with my HMS that I would rather be active even if it hurts because I don't want to lose my mobility or ability to have fun.

Anyway to cut a long story short, the diet made me able to do the AT, and now the AT has resulted in me feeling fit enough to get back to doing yoga again, which is improving my Tango, which is motivating me to stay on the diet .... It's all been a bit of a major turnaround.

It's amazing what dance can do!

Anyway, enough of me ... How is everyone else? Are many people still around?

cheers That's brilliant news Littlebear!! Sounds like a total life turnaround, and like you say, isn't it amazing what dance can do! You haven't exactly started with the easiest dance I notice!!

Had to google hypermobility syndrome (sounds rough) and paleo diet. Sounds like those cavemen/women knew a few things about keeping healthy. Being a veggie I couldn't do that diet, but I do try to stay away from any processed food, and it definitely does make a difference.

Think the forum is pretty much in hibernation mode at the moment. There's occasional chat about TV programmes and books... the book club has dwindled down to me and Sax atm, you're more than welcome to join us. We've decided to read 'Amity and Sorrow' in April, it's about a woman escaping from a cult.

Anyhow, congratulations again, and hope your health continues to get better and better Very Happy

Keeeeep dancing!

Gosh Sax - how stressful for you. I sincerely hope that they don't keep you waiting too long and that it turns out to be something harmless. There is nothing more alarming than a mysterious lump, but I think the overwhelming majority of them do turn out to be harmless don't they? It's good that they are fast-tracking you though. Will keep everything crossed for you. Do let us know how it goes, and feel free to vent here any time!

It's lovely to hear from you both.

I have done other forms of damce in the past (mostly before I got ill with the HMS) and tbh the tango is so different from all of them that I don't think it naturally follows on from any easier dance form. I think it's just as easy to learn it from scratch. In fact particularly for the guys, some of the ones who have done things like salsa and jive seem to find it hinders them as they are having to unlearn as much as they are learning.

I would highly recommend it - it's really a very social dance. And the shoes are gorgeous! I have just ordered my first pair of proper tango shoes! It's very exciting. I really hope they fit. They are quite hard to get hold of and not cheap but they are all really really sexy and beautiful!

Wow re Tango shoes!! Will you need to break them in? Do take a photo & maybe could be your new avatar! Very Happy
My friend used to do Ceroc dancing that was also very social!! I would maybe like to learn the Waltz etc!! Cannot find local lessons!!! Im sure Hatlady would have some good contacts for Tango shoes/Dresses etc Very Happy
The book Amity & Sorrow just been released & sounds a thought provoking book.

I'll definitely take a pic - am nervous about them fitting because dance shoe sizing is a bit mad! But assuming they are OK I will do. It's time my avatar was updated. Xx

Poor Sax, that's an awful scare - though as Littlebear says, the vast majority of mystery lumps turn out to be something harmless. But scary nonetheless, and good to hear it's being looked at quickly - will keep everything crossed for him, and please let us know how he gets on.
I love you

Littlebear - where's those heels?!!

Hi Sax - that's good to hear. Swollen lymph glands can be tricky customers as they can take what seems like forever to come down, and come back up again at the slightest hint of infection, but as far as I am aware they are generally just that, and completely harmless. When is the scan? Hope they don't keep you waiting too long. Reassuring to hear that's all they think it is anyway.

Glad to hear you don't have a long wait. Will be thinking of you on Tuesday - let us know how it goes.

Will try to get a moment on laptop to change my avatar over weekend. I love the shoes - they're pretty. First lesson after Easter hols was a workshop week so longer than usual weeks. For the first 50 mins the shoes felt great - it felt so good to be in the right position and the right height (the heels on the basic dancing shoes I had been using were all wrong). But then the balls of my feet started killing me. I was desperate to get them off by the end! But I'll get used to them I'm sure.

Hi Littlebear. Look forward to hearing about your progress. AT is somewhere on my to-do list.

I'm just setting up a twitter account that I can use for SCD. I'll let you know when I'm activated. Ooh-er Shocked

Ty! We are all relieved!! We may sometimes moan re the NHS yet its there when we need it! Free treatment no need to worry re cost of x rays, bloods or appointment charges.Just wish we could stop the abuse of NHS treatment! I do agree that alcohol related incidents should have a charge a small one.It might stop the odd few using ambulances as a taxi home.

Lesson still great - thanks! Still very much got the bug. The shoes have helped a lot. Taken a bit of getting used to - they're the highest heels I have ever worn by quite a margin. The first lesson I did was a 1.5hr workshop and it was agony by the end. But my feet are getting strengthened up now and they are starting to feel quite comfy. And of course the very high heel is very helpful in AT because it helps you to get your weight forward and lean in.

Am leaving for my next lesson in a few minutes actually. I used to hate Mondays - now I love them! The only Mondays I don't like are bank holidays as no AT!

Well as promised several months ago I finally got around to changing my avatar to my tango shoes. It's not a great pic but it's more "me " now than the old baby shoes one, now that my little ones are old enough for me to have a semblance of a social life again, and go to AT lessons wearing lipstick and pretty shoes!

I too am doing the Argentine Tango although I haven't risen to such heel heights. I love it! My one ballroom dance skill is that I am good at following. Argentine Tango is a difficult follow as there can be multiple cues which may be why I enjoy the challenge. However, since I am a follower, I haven't found that I've had to unlearn anything. Sometimes I get halfway through a step before I recognise what step it is....the zen of following.

I like following too, because, quite honestly I like not having to think. I am not saying following is easy - it's incredibly hard actually, if you have grown up always making your own decisions, being responsible for yourself and dancing on your own! But it does make a nice change and I am getting much better at it.

You should try the heels - I am utterly rubbish in heels as a general rule. I can't walk in heels! But they do make tango much more achievable. The positioning is really tricky if you're not used to leaning in to someone (and frankly, who is?). I found it so much easier once I got into the heels. I still can't walk in them on my own I but I see people who have been tangoing all their lives and they looks so elegant in their shoes on the dancefloor, and then they nip off to the loo and they look like John Wayne! So I know I am in good company! Noone can actually walk in those things! But they are great for leaning into your man :-)
