Short Straw
Alway is one and I think poor Anton got it in a competition sense. Took it like the gent he is though. Goldie and Jimmy Mistry to surpise and Gavin Henson looks like Joe Calzague II. All a bit too early for any real views but it should be fun anyway.

Hi Tangolero.
I thought there were two short straws. Anton and Ola. I think the only difference between the two is that Anton will do his best to support Ann whereas I believe Ola may well want to kill Paul Daniels within 30 minutes of the first training session. I know I would.

Yes I think they will probably get on like a house on fire. He'll have a laugh anyway.

Yeah, you're right David. Paul Daniels will need more than card tricks here, and if Peter Shilton doesn't shape up with beautiful Erin I'm applying to bring him off and send me on as a sub. Unless Gavin H loses that bodybuilder stalk and loosens up he'll find himself in the sin bin too.

Did you think it was rather cruel at the end - the way they had Felicity/Ann left with Anton/Vincent? I'm not naive enough to think they're not going to maximise the entertainment value that Ann will provide but there was something about the "oh please don't let me get her" feeling which smacked of playground bullying. It's ok, I didn't spend all night weeping into my pillow at the sadness of it all, I'm just remembering the vile posts about Natalie being "fat" last year and wondering what this year will bring ....

The height difference between Ann and Anton is ludicrous!

No, I think Ann is more than happy to go along with it all. Her self-deprecation pretty much invites that kind of approach. I think she'll get a lot out of SCD; she's the kind of person that the public thought they knew - and will now realise they actually knew nothing about. I did notice the relief on Vincent's face when he realised he'd got Felicity - although surely they all knew upfront????

(((David))) Missed our ((()))!
Yes, that's true.
And I'm sure they did know in advance - they all ended up with their real partner in the group dance didn't they? The one I thought was surprisingly nervous was Patsy Kensit. I do hope she does well. I was never a big fan until I saw her on Who Do You Think You Are and on that I thought she was a really genuinely nice person.

Re: Short Straw
I watched the show with an increasing sense of unease. I too hope they don't go too far down the Anne-Widdecome's-there-to-be-the-brunt-of-the-laughs. Yes, she's intelligent enough to have gone into this with her eyes wide open, and I heard her say to Anton "you've got your work cut out". She's certainly got enough self-deprecation to not get carried away and I think she's going to be game. I think she'll be fine. But it annoyed me a little that there was clearly the "ooooh, who's going to get Ann" - smacked a little of being picked last in the PE class at school. Maybe she'll be great - I presume she'll be doing the waltz first, so she has more of a chance than if she was doing the cha cha. However if she's not that great it runs the risk of people getting all het up, a la John Sergeant, and I got really bored of that.
But, it's a light entertainment show, and whether you vote for the best dancer or the one whose performance you enjoyed most, it's not the most important thing in the world. And that seems to be her attitude.

I'm pretty sure the Beeb have long ago realised that underdogs attract and will get big support. Anne Widicombe, if she's any sense (which she has) will get in there and enjoy the hell out of it within her capabilities. Anton is the perfect foil as he isn't afraid of laughing at himself and a dance floor also has a habit of bringing out quite a few surprises.

Anton and Ann will be entertaining at least. Ann is aware of her limitations and tells it straight. It is poor Ola I feel sorry for. Paul Daniels seems a strange character from other reality shows and I can see him walking if he doesn't like it.
My dark horse is Jimi he looks up for it. Most likely to be wooden Gavin. Likely to surprise Pamela.
I can't wait!!
