Youtube, external sites and photos

We have a couple of concerns surrounding linking to external sites, adding photos and so on.

The first is space and performance - we don't know how much space we have and how it will affect performance as the site gets busier. So if we could refrain from posting massive photo attachments it would be handy - links to flikr or other photo sharing sites are fine.

The second concerns copyrighted information. The fact that something is on one site doesn't automatically mean that it's ok to post it elsewhere. If you aren't absolutely certain it's OK to post it then it's probably best not to. Youtube in particular tends to fall foul of this.

The third is the appropriateness of the link. It may be, particularly if it's something personal like a photo that other people in the photo didn't want it to be distributed widely. I remember the crying child video from youtube from last year and while it was amusing to rip to pieces the poster who stuck a video of their own child in torment online, it would have been better had it not gone up there in the first place.

Sorry to sound like a killjoy, but that's my job and it would make it easier y'all could just bear all this in mind.

No problem. I don't like those big You Tube links anyway - they make the screen all messy.

Is it ok to link the tunes on the song thread to Youtube? Sometimes written songs read better if you've got the tune in your head? B4p

No worries - we just need people to be aware that we aren't the BBC so don't have the resources to pay for vast server farms or dozens of people to moderate the site.

I would also like to make the point that this site is for all people who used to post on the BBC boards and it is important to remember that many people prefer the written word rather than pictures to communicate.

Please bear that in mind when posting. I don't want to curtail anyone's enjoyment of the boards but it is a fact that some people find excessive use of smilies an irritant rather than an enjoyment.

This is going to sound really silly. I would be happy to go back and remove things that I've put up. I appreciate the limited size of the site and it just struck me that if people are going to react/comment on a link or a picture, they will do within a day or so. After that, one can just as well cut it. I know this can't be a policy, but if people do do this it will leave space for other people to put things up.

Although, I tend to stick to words and the occasional discrete youtube link, I do enjoy the over-the-top enthusiasm of something like the Tartan Lounge. I don't want them to have to be too drab and Calvinist.

Calvinist ? That may be over interpreting what we're asking for. It's no big deal just everyone think before posting something far too large or inappropriate. It's not a huge restriction - barely a restriction at all. I don't do restrictions. Not without a safety word.
